But he wasn’t always happy. In fact, for years he considered himself a “tortured artist.” As an award-winning commercial filmmaker, he was enjoying ten of his most creative years without actually enjoying them. This all came to a head when anxiety, frustration, and built up dissatisfaction pushed him to unexpectedly quit his job. During our conversation on Transformational Tuesdays, Scott shared the 7 Core Skills

  2. Savor the NOW … Practice being in the present moment
  3. Service … Lift someone else up and you will be lifted yourself.
  4. Detox … Stress, Anxiety, and Worry have to go!
  5. Foster Positive Relationships … We all need human connection. Recharge when you are alone.
  6. Improve Daily … Be in awe of the newness of life
  7. Begin Again … Feel the gratitude all over again.

Scott practices his own gratitude by bringing to mind 3 fortunate things that have happened that day before he goes to bed at night. Many of you know I am all about keeping a gratitude journal. It doesn’t matter if you do this in the morning, at night or even during the day, as long as you do it. I like the idea of gratitude being the last thing you think about at night before you sleep. I have heard Wayne Dyer say that whatever enters your mind right before you go to sleep is the “marinade” for your sleep and your dreams. Gratitude is SO much better than the news! Turn off the TV!

You can’t be Grateful and Unhappy at the same time. Scott’s work as a commercial filmmaker has taken him all over the world. When he went to Cambodia, he was surprised to find the people “Naturally Happy.” I have experienced children from Karogoto Kenya, many whom had no idea where their next meal was coming from, with truly heartfelt smiles of joy on their faces, and genuinely grateful or what little they do have. It’s all not just about what you have, happiness is reflected in your relationships with others and your smile is a tell tale sign if you are faking it. Think about that for a minute.

Scott’s book, The 7 Core Skills of Everyday Happiness: Scientifically Proven Skills or a Happier, More Meaningful Life, approaches happiness from a scientific angle and throughout our conversation, he talked about several studies that have been done that prove there is science behind happiness. The Yearbook Study, determined that the smiles on the faces of people in their yearbook pictures could tell whether they were genuine or fake smiles.
